With Pipe & Book Blend Old Guide

Bought this in September 2023 smoked it liked it very much didn't think much about it.last night I smoked it again wondering why I haven't smoked it more nice smooth, nice flavor no bite.any way will smoke it alot more.

As a newbie pipe smoker I was buying many sample tobaccos to try and find one that I liked. Came across Old Guide and concluded I had found my main staple tobacco. Very smooth smoke without bite and has a great aroma. Quite mild, which is what I wanted. Give it a try!

This has quickly become one of my favorites. Extremely smooth, no tongue bite, with a mild pleasant room note.

I have enjoyed this blend for 35+ years. Have often thought that if this blend is no longer available, my pipe smoking days are over. Flavorfull, aromatic and without bite. Often commented on favorably (with reminiscenses - reminds me of my grandfather) if lit in a public place.

mild yet full body; an excellent evening smoke

I anxiously awaited the arrival of this tobacco because the name made me think of sitting in an easy chair, smoking a pipe with a good book in my hand as the snow is falling outside. It didn't disappoint. This is the adult version of Black Cavendish. Just a touch of sweetness, vanilla isn't overpowering and a tad stronger than most black Cavs. A good change of pace when I get tired of highly sweetened and flavored black Cavs. This one will be in my lineup.

good taste

I liked this as a good dark tobacco. A very smooth smoke and a wonderful nose. You do have to let it dry a bit before smoking and I found it was better in a wider bowl than a deeper one.

Still my favorite pipe tobacco.

I saw lots of great rating so I thought I would try it. When I opened the bag the tobacco felt really dry. I also got a bag of Captain Black and it was moist .Don't like the taste burns to hot.

What great flavor! The title makes me think of quiet contemplation, the best thing about pipe smoking.No tongue bite, mild yet full of aroma and taste. I began smoking a pipe with Amphora mild and this reminds me of that but with a better taste.

This is the Best tasting Full flavor, Black Cavendish I have ever tasted. I have tried just about every Cavendish out there, and i enjoy Old Guide. I smoked it straight, but will save some to blend. Thank You Cup of Joe's.

This is by far the smoothest smoke I have ever come across. I flat out LOVE it

With Pipe & Book Blend one gets what one expects with a cavedish blend which is a soft sweet smoke without any harshness. This blend is suppose to have Virginia and Latakia in the blend but I could not taste it. The vanilla topping is thankfully kept subdued which means one can taste the blend itself rather than the topping and allows the blend to burn cleanly to a white ash. On lighting up I noticed this blend produces a great deal of smoke which leaves a nice room note. This blend has an amazing characteristic in that it burns long and full-one bowl in my pipe lasted a full hour of steady full puffing-I have never seen any tobacco burn this long and full before. This tobacco on a downside hits but one steady note from start to finish-I cannot imagine smoking this straight but I know I want to have plenty of this for blending that can tone down any blend too strong. This blends well with almost anything -I have tried this with 50% Turkish or 50% Perique and have found one gets a powerful smoke while adding a nice evening sweetness. I give this blend as a stan alone smoke as a 4 star but as a blening agent it is a 5. Finally, this blend is a good buy as the price is good and provides a unusually long smoke time. Recommend having plenty of this stocked on the side-it can save that blend that might be a tad too strong for you.

This blend is a unique flavor in that the smoke carries it like cream, best with something to drink. The bite can start if smoked too fast, take it slow and you won't be disappointed.

With a Book and a Pipe is absolutely one of the best Cavendish blends I have ever smoked. I am a long time BCA fan and I believe With a Book and a Pipe is a better choice. It’s easy to light, cool burning, with a rich creamy smoke and just a subtle hint of vanilla. The Latakia is very subtle and is key to the richness of this blend. If you are a Cavendish smoker you have to try this blend. It’s perfect when you just want to relax or as a all day smoke.

A great, mild blend with a hint of vanilla in a toasted cavendish. Ideal relaxing smoke with no bite and thick white smoke. Ideal by itself or for blending.

I have smoked this mixture exclusively for the past 35 years, originally purchased from With Pipe and Book (Lake Placid, New York). Mild, flavorful, an excellent aroma and no bite! Not infrequently I receive the comment "It reminds me of my grandfather, so pleasant."

I initially purchased this Tobacco looking for an all day smoke. It didn’t disappoint. It lights easily and requires fvery few relights. With a Pipe and a Book produces a thick creamy white smoke with a subtle taste of Vanilla. It is not overwhelming as some aeromatics are and taste the same ally the way to the bottom of the bowl. I would not hesitate to recommend this blend to a beginner or a more experienced smoker.

For how inexpensive this tobacco is, one might question how well it smokes and how good it tastes. I can tell you with certainty that it is a great smoke and taste, and at the price, you really can't beat it. It is an aromatic, so I find it to be a great morning, on-the-way-to-work smoke. I would highly recommend!

This is a good blend. It is really​ smooth and has an excellent vanilla aroma. I had no problems keeping it lit at all. My only complaint is that the vanilla flavor isn't quite as strong as I had hoped, but overall I was really happy with this blend. I would certainly recommend it.

I use to buy a tobacco mixture from a shop in Lake Placid. It went out of business. I looked on the web for the same mixture and I found that Cup O' Joes have their formula. Now I can go back to my favorite mixture!!
