It's not a bad starter kit; it is exactly what it says, a starter kit. Nothing special here: the tobacco that comes with it isn't great. Not overpowering, but for a beginner I would have preferred a more aromatic, and pleasant room note; the pipe is not what I was expecting. The bowl shape is the same, but I got some sort of teenagers' civic colored anodized blue stem. Doesn't really say "working man" and is not my cup o' joe, if you know what I mean. This isn't a bad little smoker, but just be aware that there are going to be some variations with the pipe. If I had it to do over again I would have made my own starter kit.
I am re-doing my review for this kit. This kit was my introduction to pipe smoking, so it was my 1st everything. Now that I have tried over 50 blends from English, Balkan, Aromatics, Virginia's to Perique I have a little more experience so I can actually give this tobacco a fair review. I now own about 15 pipes as well. So let me get to this tobacco. For a VaPer it is very rich and smooth, it has a citrus/grassy flavor (which is delicious) also the tin note smells like freshly baked bread. The room note is of something my grandfather would have smoked at the old hunting camp when I was a kid. The pipe is actually one of my favorite pipes, it was my first and it will always have a spot in my rotation, as will this blend. I recommend it heavily, it's a good blender as well.
So I wasn't really a big fan of the tobacco, its just plain tobacco, its smooth, just not very flavorful. But the pipe is pretty good for the price, cool design and smokes pretty good. This kit is perfect for a beginner.
I hadn't smoked a pipe in a while, and I was happy to find an inexpensive starter kit. I was a bit confused by the selection of the pipe included. It is barely a pipe and delivers a hot sharp stream of smoke directly onto your tongue burning away any pesky unwanted tastebuds. I can only assume that the selection of this pipe is to encourage you to buy a different pipe. The only reason this review is not lower is the low cost. If you are paying this price for what you get in this kit, you'd have to expect the corners got cut somewhere. It's the pipe.
